Bike Hugger: Cyclist Shot by Firefighter in North Carolina

From the post:

Readers tipped us to a story from Asheville North Carolina where a city firefighter has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after he fired a handgun at a bicyclist.

The cyclist and the firefighter apparently argued about the cyclist riding on a busy road with his three-year-old in tow. The firefighter apparently thought that bullets were safer than bikes.

From the referenced article:

The bullet blew a hole through the outer lining of Simons' helmet and went straight through both sides of it, but he was not hit.

And I thought it was bad when people in cars didn't respect when my bike and I had the right of way!

Gmail Requiring SMS Verification for New Accounts?

From Gmail Help:

If you'd like to sign up for a Gmail address, you need to have a mobile phone that has text-messaging capabilities.

Thank God I signed up before I could even use the account!

I'm torn about this. I think it's a good move to help stop spammers in the Gmail system, and to limit resource waste. But there needs to be an alternate method of verification for Gmail. Not all of us who have connected to the internet have need of, use for, or the budget to afford a mobile phone.

Handerpants!

Underpants for your hands!

Are you really naked under those gloves? For Pete's sake, put on some Handerpants! These 95% cotton, 5% spandex, fingerless gloves have the look and feel of men's briefs. Slip them on underneath your gloves for extra warmth and protection from chafing! Wear them on their own as a vaguely inappropriate fashion statement...

I soooo want a pair of these before winter arrives!

AVG vs. iTunes? Or AVG vs. Customer Service?

According to Mashable, AVG has had an episode of flagging iTunes as a trojan.

I've had my own experience with AVG and false positives. It should've been a simple matter, but that's not how things turned out. Of course, false positives are going to happen, but AVG's customer service certainly made the experience harder than it had to be, at least for users of the free version. And it looks like AVG still handles matters in a similar fashion.

And that's a shame. Alex Eckleberry from Sunbelt Software actually helped me figure out what was going on during my false positive experience. It's not hard to guess which of these two companies I came away from the experience respecting.
